I still remember the day my son was born. The bright lights of the delivery room, the nervous silence that filled the space between my heartbeats, and then, there he was. Small, fragile, and impossibly beautiful. I was young, scared, and utterly unprepared for what it meant to be someone’s mother.
In that moment, as I held him for the first time, I almost forgot that the world outside kept moving. All I could see was this tiny life in my arms. Without even planning it, I made a promise: I will do whatever it takes to help you discover your potential. In making that promise to him, I began to find my own purpose.
The promise I made that day became my compass. From the very beginning, I pictured not just the boy in front of me, but the man he might one day become: a brother, a partner, a husband, a father. Every choice, boundary, and act of care was guided by one principle: his voice matters, even when we disagree.
The Power of Listening
It’s easy, as parents, to assume we always know best. But research and lived experience tell us otherwise. Teens, especially sons raised in single-parent households, face heightened psychosocial risk factors, including school disengagement, substance use, and other adverse behavioural outcomes. Listening to them, valuing their perspectives, and allowing them to express themselves safely can be a protective factor, fostering resilience, emotional intelligence, and self-worth.
My curiosity about child development and psychology led me to formal study. I earned qualifications in Early Childhood Development and a postgraduate degree in psychology, not only to guide my own parenting but to understand how children and families thrive.
More Than Just Milestones
Even with knowledge, parenting isn’t glamorous. Most people post milestone moments or perfectly captured smiles. But the truth is, the silent, awkward, “I have no idea what I’m doing” moments shape children just as much. Those times, when we feel unsure, frustrated, or exhausted, are exactly when children need to feel that their voice matters. Integrating my academic knowledge with lived experience allows me to help parents navigate these moments, ensuring they feel heard and never alone.
That initial promise in the delivery room became the foundation of my professional work. Today, I am an author, parent coach, and facilitator, creating tools and programs that help families navigate real-world parenting challenges. My books include:
- My Kid Failed, Now What?
- Why Won’t They Eat?: A Parent’s Guide to the Psychology of Picky Eaters
- The Screen-Savvy Parent: Mastering Screen Time and Wellbeing
- The Dad & Daughter Puberty Toolkit
Alongside writing, I facilitate programs that bring these lessons to life, workshops, coaching sessions, and community events where parents can reflect, question, and build the networks of support that modern families often lack.
A Foundation for a Movement
Seventeen years later, I look at my son and see both the boy I once held and the man he is becoming. I see the importance of raising children with intention, guided by values, grounded in knowledge, and always anchored in love and respect. The nervous young mother in the delivery room wasn’t just promising him a future; she was laying the foundation for a movement: ensuring every child can realize they have unlimited potential.
Parenting deserves more than manuals and quick tips. My purpose is to help parents navigate the real-world challenges of raising children, guiding them to focus on what truly matters. It’s about promises, vision, and building villages where children and parents can thrive, even in the messy, unglamorous moments
